In Australia we had a Letterman wannabe by the name of Steve Vizard. However at the time (1989 - 1992), we didn't get Letterman on TV here so many people didn't know any better.

While on TV, Shawno & Jen might remember a few conversations towards the end of last year on Erk Pod and Erk Pod Round Tables regarding the Border Security show here in Australia. I reported at the time that the Americans had purchased the show for their audiences.

After I got home from America, I learnt that here in Australia, they are currently showing Border Security: USA. It is the American version of our show but filmed in locations such as El Paso and Mexicali/Calexico, JFK, Detroit etc. In America, it is (or was) on ABC and is titled Homeland Security USA. I wonder if anyone has seen the American version and can tell me if it has an American narrator. Here, the guy who narrates BS: Australia also narrates the American version.

Speaking of Talk Shows around 1999 I was working in Germany, in some small town outside of Frankfort. I turned on the TV and flipped through the channels. The only thing in english was SkyNews. But I found this late night talk show that was on around 11:30. It looked like David Letterman circa 1985. The host dressed like David did, A blue blazer and khaki pants. He even went backstage and talked to people in the offices. I couldn't understand a word he was saying (since I don't understand German) but I could almost put the words in his mouth.

I felt like I was dropped in an alternate universe where everything was the same but different.

Oh, and just to say the 10.5.7 update for me went through without a hitch, My Mac Mini is now two years old. Looking forward to both the iphone 3.0 upgrade and snowleopard when that appears.

There never seems to be any good Late Shows here in the UK, the only one really is Newsnight - but thats political and serious news.
I suppose Friday night with Jonathan Ross is the closest you'd get to it.
What with the state of TV all over the world I'm not surprised if they filmed the dog playing with the grenade first and posted it to "animals do the funniest things".

And we have double digits in comments, people! I thought I'd take the podium to make my stance on late night talk shows known. I don't really like any of them. And when I was a kid...I thought Johnny Carson was ok, but I think I liked his voice more than anything else. In some ways he reminded me of my grandfather. But as for enjoying watching the show, not so much. But what did I know. I was a kid, after all.

The late night show debate reminds me of people arguing over when the golden age of SNL was. At least in that argument I think there was a time that was much more enjoyable for me to watch. It's been almost unwatchable for me now for 10+ years. Some time before that it was better. I enjoyed the first few seasons on tape back in the day especially. But Adam Sandler and a few other characters between those times were pretty good.

I love that you used the word "futz" , David VanSunder! :)

Robert, your book sounds awesome! I remember slam books. They were fun, and sometimes dangerous.

All Right! I'm Number 7 for the week. 3 more and you can be back in the double digits. You asked where I listen to you at. I listen at work. I work 3rd shift stock for a local grocery chain. Listening to posdcasts is one of the only ways I can make it through the night.

Glad to see you got everything working again with the mini. Sorry it set you back so many hours. I know how that can be and it's never fun. So far, I've been lucky and only had the problem with windows. My upgrade on my MBP went fine. Haven't upgraded the 12" Powerbook though. Now I'm wondering if I'll bother. It's a bit older and I don't have time to futz with it if something goes wrong. Guess I'll do a search and see if anyone else had problems with it first.

Now I have to claim triumph and say that I guessed Germany with the live grenade. That's mainly because all the weirdest stories I've heard over the past 10 years all came out of either Florida or Germany. Go figure.

Ok Shawno, you were right. Those band names are pretty awesome in the video. Perv Herder? Flourescent Shoes Are Way Neato? And I thought all the good names were already taken. Apparently there are still a few great names out there...

I wanted to make a comment about Conan O'Brien/Jay Leno/Carson/Letterman--the late night discussion you were having. My wife and I were avid Tonight Show with Jay Leno watchers. We DVRed it and watched it during dinner the following evening. We watched the first week of Conan O'Brien and although a few bits were funny, the majority of it I couldn't stand and Amanda (my wife) couldn't either. We both can't wait until Leno comes back in the fall. So if it were Amanda and me we will be watching Leno and screw the Tonight Show. We may be anomalies (if you look at TVSquad.com there are a lot of Leno bashers) but I'm sure there are several people like us. It is my understanding that Leno's show will be an hour show not a half hour show like you were saying. I never really liked Letterman either primarily because I think Paul Schaeffer is annoying. Leno and Kevin Eubanks (his bandleader) always worked off each other very well. Andy Richter was kind of annoying on the first week of Conan, but not nearly as bad as Schaeffer.

I have to disagree with what you were saying about the Carson Tonight Show bringing instant success to whoever got their start on it. It may have happened a few times, but according to Steve Martin in his book Born Standing Up, comedians could go on Carson many many times and in Martin's case not get known until the 10th appearance or something like that. Then again, Steve Martin is not uproariously funny in my opinion.

I do agree with Jen about the relevance of these shows. At least with the Internet, if there is anything worthy or particularly funny in any of these shows, the clip will be shown on the Internet and people will talk about it on Twitter.
