Hyper Nonsense as Argentinian goat-herders. That’s just one weird image too many…
Bureaucracy makes life complicated. Who knew?
I googled my name once just as I was starting the podcast. I wasn’t expecting anything, but there was a guy called Colin Gazeley who was the bassist for a ’60s jazz-fusion band. Now when I do it it’s all related to my podcasts or reviews I’ve written. The ‘Jellyfish’ video is very high on the list.
Stoned on anti-histamines = saying ‘awesome’.
Companies like Burger King have enough staff to search for any reference to them but I doubt Evos do. Did you hear about Burger King issuing a cease and desist to a twitter user?
I’ve heard that .mkv files are good because they have easier layering for things like subtitles and alternative soundtracks. There’s no excuse for Doctor Who though.
There’s a UK comedian called Frankie Boyle and part of his routine is saying that Sarah Jessica Parker is either an ugly woman or a beautiful sea-horse.
Lets face it, Axl Rose is just a dickhead. There’s NO excuse for taking that long over an album.
Italians are stupid. This is a country that still elects fascists. It’s worth pointing out that The Daily Telegraph where the story came from is as right-wing as mainstream papers get in the UK.
Has this mental patient never read Catch-22?

It’s my theory that there seems to be a lot of phantom (my spam word) lesbians and bisexual chicks out there.
“Oooh, I kissed a chick once. Where’s my ticket to Lesbos?”
“My best friend and I make out. But I like guys too. I’m bi-sexual.”
“I’m 15 and on Myspace. What happens if I tick bi-sexual? Will I be cool then?”
I’ll go looking for my Horns of Importance now………

Would ‘horns of importance’ be euphamistic there Erk?

Mplayer OSX and VLC play mkv files, at least the “waterworld.1995.1080p.hddvd.dts.x264.sample-hv.mkv” i tried. I don’t see any benefits though, the quality sucks. Guess it’s another one of those phases the bittorrent teens are going though, like ogg a few years back. On a G4 Mplayer OSX works mucho better than VLC if you turn on the option to cache media.
According to Google i am retired and live in Fort Myers, FL, and on Facebook there’s a picture of me in front of the Sydney opera house. Good thing my real name is Pete Jones.

mkv is an acknowledged production format for HD. Once you compress (for it to be on the internets) it becomes pointless.
You could try Visualhub to convert it – or just ask me nicely

I have to agree with Shawno about the 100 calorie snack packs. While Jen is right that someone is better off having a snack pack then a whole bag of oreos, there’s nothing stopping them from eating multiple packs unless they only eat them outside the house. A box comes with 6 oreo snack packs. I’ve even seen a lady eating 2 packs of those at one sitting. It’s almost where if you need the individual packs to keep your eating down, you pretty much need someone handing you only one pack a day. When you’re doing that, you might as well do as Shawno said and have someone just put 2-3 of those oreos in a bag. If you can control yourself with then you could probably just grab 2-3 yourself and stick them in a bag to take with you. It’s probably cheaper, too.
And if you’re on a diet…oreos? Seriously? You could have another cookie that’s not quite so bad couldn’t you? Don’t ditch everything, but oreos? That’s a poor choice right there.

Oh, and I almost forgot. If you get AAA, they used to make you a one time use plastic key that is in a little credit card sized piece of plastic. You can keep it in your wallet and use it for the time when you lock your key in the car. Although, it won’t start your car of course. Plus, AAA will open your car if you lock your keys in. I think it’s $49 a year and you get free maps and lots of discounts on hotels, car rentals, some restaurants & stores. So, it can pay for itself really quickly.
We get 20% off the reebok outlet over here using AAA and with how much Talli runs, I think it pays for itself in discounts on running shoes and socks alone. So, it might be worth getting. Maybe even just get it a little before you need one of those discounts. Then it’s like getting a towing service for a couple bucks or tossed in for free. They’ve saved me more than a couple times.

I’m hyper (spam word) excited about my new podcast so pardon the blatant self promotion (for once!)…….
I am now doing a music podcast! Inspired by people like Colin and Rowley who do great music shows, I thought that I would go ahead and do one too. It seems a shame for me to only play great music on Round Tables to give people a chance to stretch their legs or talk among themselves…….
So from the end of this week, you will be able to listen to a music show by me with the creative name of
*horns of importance*
Erk FM!
(spent ages thinking of that name!)
I will be producing an episode a week that will drop into your computer at the end of the working week. Episode 1 is ready to go and you’ll be able to recognise some of the songs in this week’s episode!
For more details, go to http://www.erkfm.com
(oh and I hear those talented people “The Sidebars” will be coming up on episode 2!)

It’s amazing to think of the power (spam word) of the Google. I have Google alerts for various variations of Erk and some of the crap that comes through! This is especially the case when people are erked and spell it that way rather than irked. Although I notice that JCD isn’t as erked since RT12. Maybe it’s the season to be jolly, fra fra fra fra la la la la la la la la la
I’ve got to say that Jen is being VERY patient with the education system in starting this new job. Having said that, there are heaps of red tape in situations like this in any public service organisation. But some of it is very basic and can be solved by a simple phone call. For instance, they could have rang Jen and said “don’t come in until the 12th” when they hired the sub. Sometimes the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing and sometimes the right hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing!
I know Shawno listens to Le Show with Harry Shearer and there are a lot of stories on the current episode in relation to the Digital TV conversion. Indeed he gets so many letters about it, he has made it into a segment. On this episode, he talks about a NY rural community that is on the edge of the metro where 100% of the community would not be able to get a digital signal from their TV stations. There is even talk of pushing the conversion day back.

Fingerprints can take more than a month to come through. Been through the whole fingerprint thing here and in the USA. Actually these days its more than just fingerprints, it’s the side of your plams and the heel of your palm too! The technology for scanning fingerprints is nothing short of amazing. Truly awesome computing power.
My Facebook and Twitter profiles are protected. For good reason too. I value you my privacy.
My offer to send you DVDs of Doctor Who in avi, still stands.
SJP does not equal sexy, hot, gorgeous or good looking. I don’t think she is remotely glamourous or stunning. Scarlett Johansson on the other hand….

I tried a couple mPlayer frontends but none of them work. Any other suggestions?

Here’s some info on getting .mkv files to play on a Mac, but looks kinda complicated.

I used to have trouble with mkvs but upgrading to vlc 0.9.8c seems to have fixed things.
January 17th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Thanks to Paul for the Captain Obvs. suggestion. I upgraded VLC Player, and it will play the files. But playback is very stilted and choppy. This is either due to the fact that it’s an older computer, or the files themselves may be corrupt. Either way, I think we’re ready to take Orange Tim up on his kind offer of mailing us the shows. This little science project needs to come to an end!
