Big congrats on getting the job, Jen! I know how much you’ve wanted to get out of retail hell and very shortly, you will be! Good for you!
I enjoyed the school talk and hearing more about you guys as teenagers. Who would have thought that Jen skipped classes yet grew up to be a teacher and Shawno would sleep during classes?
I had to laugh when Jen was telling us about Driver’s Ed (one of many things that our school system doesn’t do). When she spoke about crashing into things, I heard the crash and thought that Shawno was spot on with the buttons only to find that it was a real crash next to HN Studio A! Too funny!
As for my high school, we had 8 periods a day (40 min) on Monday, Thursday & Friday. Wednesday was sport day so we had 5 periods then sport after lunch and Tuesday was 7 periods. 8th period on Tuesdays was supposed to be the religion period but they didn’t do that every week and let us go home 40 minutes early. Instead, that was the detention period. Our religion was restricted to a 2 hour special once a term. Detention was either at lunch, period 8 on Tuesday or after school. It was NEVER NEVER on a Saturday! Yuck! You’ll also have to tell me about summer school as we don’t do that, either.

Congratulations, Jen! We were pulling for you to get the job. It’s a nice Christmas present…even if you have to be in retail hell for a few more days. At least that new job that’s waiting for you will keep up morale because you know the current one is ending.
As for how much time you have to give at work….two weeks is a courtesy. In California, they can lay you off without a single day notice and you can leave without any as well. People give the two weeks notice out of courtesy, even though they’re not required to by law. Besides, that way you can get a nice reference in the future if you need it. Although, since you’re never going back to retail, that might not matter. Dec 27 since they have no schedule yet and you were taking time off is more than reasonable.
So, now that you’re about to start a new job Jen, you and Shawno can have a great Christmas over at the Hypernonsense Estates! Really happy for you guys.

Ok, just finished listening to the show.
A few more comments! You were saying that your Circuit City looks like it’s doing fine. I think it was because your store isn’t closing. They’re closing down a bunch of stores and laying people off, but not all of them. Here’s the list of all the closing stores http://tinyurl.com/5g2c7p. I didn’t find SLO on the list, but if the store is in a nearby city, I might have missed it.
Circuit City is only going through Chapter 11 bankruptcy at the moment. That’s the one that allows them to shed some costs and restructure themselves. Of course, if they’re too bad off, they’ll end up going to Chapter 7 and then they’ll be liquidated. Hopefully for those people that work there, they don’t end up that way.
Also, I have to say that Jen talking about peanut butter in schools made me think about kindergarten. We had peanut butter on everything back then. Peanut butter sandwiches, PB on celery and PB on apple slices. I really loved that. I had to come home and do exactly the same thing there. Sad to think that kids can’t do that anymore. What do they have instead? Seems like kids aren’t allowed to have any fun anymore.

“Halloween Is Awesome” is listed on the Funny 30 ballot.
Go vote.

Congrats Jen on the new job! The Circuit city and Linens and things stores is something else. They are selling the carpet if you wanted it. They need these stores closed to get out of the leases and cut their losses on paying. The only thing Circuit city cares about is profits. Over the past 12 years, I have seen them cut out all the little people to save money while at the same time customer service goes down. It’s like having a Ferrari and taking off the tires and still expecting it to go 200 MPH. If CC closes any more stores, A lot of us techs will lose our jobs.
By the way, great show!

One more sleep to go, Jen! One more sleep to go then no more retail hell!
I listened back to Round Table 12 (now available) when I was editing it and it was quite easy to tell that Jen was VERY happy.
Oh, and my spam word is booze!
December 28th, 2008 at 1:21 am
My spam word is hyper and that’s relevant because today I decided to push ahead with my planned US trip and decided I wanted to go April/May! Now to arrange leave, ticket and passport! Yay me! Watch out, SLO!
December 28th, 2008 at 1:24 am
Good luck, Erk!
December 28th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
First of all, congrats on the job thing, Jen!
By the way, I really liked that promo thingie at the beginning. You should play that lots more, okay? ;-0
As for the CostCo discounts on gift cards (which I gotta remember to check out), I recalled (and found) an article from last year about gift cards:
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/12/holiday_gift_cards.html
Quote: “A study conducted earlier this year for Consumer Reports found that 27 percent of gift card recipients have not used one or more of the cards, up from 19 percent at the same time last year. And among consumers with unredeemed cards from last season, 51 percent have 2 or more.”
And that’s why CostCo can sell them at 80% of cost. If folks don’t use the cards, there’s very little cost, it’s almost all profit. And they have plenty of cash they can give back to the original company.
Was that too serious?

I’m going to use post 100 to say officially that I HATE homeless people.
Today I was at lunch at KFC. I was sitting down and eating some chicken and twittering. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see a figure come towards me and lift up my cup of Pepsi. I looked up to see a homeless guy take a massive gulp of Pepsi. I yelled out to him “what the hell do you think you are doing?” and then he ran off. I threw my half full drink into the bin.
I probably shouldn’t say that I HATE a group of people but f**k it! I hate homeless people (at least in this city!).
Very, very angry! And you’ll hear about it on the next episode of Erk Pod!
December 29th, 2008 at 1:23 am
Wow! You have Republicans in Australia, too!
Is Australia still a giant prison farm? We’d like to send you the entire Bush Administration.
December 30th, 2008 at 2:46 am
Ken, you’ll be surprised to hear that we don’t all walk around handcuffed, shackled and wearing prison orange or prison green! And no, we don’t want Shrub!
December 31st, 2008 at 5:24 am
We don’t have Saturday detentions here in the UK, but I did have one or two after-school detentions. No opportunity for The Breakfast Club…
Jen’s a witch!!!!!!!!!! She points and stuff falls off the wall!!!!!!!!!!!
Yayyyyyyyyy! Now Jen’s employed there’s only me left.
Too bad about Jen not eating the trifle. Here in the UK you can get individual trifles in yoghourt pots. Maybe you can find them in the US?
I accused by one of my very good podcasting friends of whining too much on my show, so I like the downbeat stuff. (Having said that yay again for the job).
I HATE reality shows and haven’t ever watched Survivor (it never really took off over here, Big Brother rules in the UK), but didn’t they have an ex NFL Quarterback as a contestant once?
I. Love. The. Killers.
Cartoon characters can be VERY hot. That doesn’t mean I want to marry one though…
Since I’m listening to this one late (still haven’t fully caught up after NaPodPoMo) Happy New Year.
January 1st, 2009 at 12:54 am
Good shit Jen! LOL! Sorry, but everyone else was saying Congrats etc, so I thought I’d be a little different.
Best of luck in 2009.
At the beginning of the show, my daughter though it was a giant bee was on the computer.
My Mum makes a wicked trifle! My Grandma did too years ago. Can’t say it’s my fav dessert, but it is a yummy dessert.
Thanks for a great year Shawno & Jen!
January 4th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
Woo hoo for Jen. Good to hear about the job!!
I love Trifle so shawno if you want to make one to share i’ll be in it!!
I wish our school system had drivers ed I may have learned a thing or two as I am an ok driver but far from the best!
Thanks for a Gr8 ‘08′ cant wait for HN ‘09′ . Cheers!

It’s almost like Jen’s first day of school all over again!
Good luck for tomorrow, Jen!
It seems strange to me that school starts so soon again after Xmas/NY. As my fellow Australians know, the summer school holiday is the longest break of the school year. It generally runs mid December to the last week in January or first week in February, usually running for 6 weeks. Having said that, there was a time recently here in NSW where school didn’t break up until 2 days before Xmas.
And when the schools do start back for the start of the school year (which is based on a calendar year), the staff go back on one day. Then depending on the school, the resumption days for the students are staggered.
