Shawno asks: Who is John C Dvorak?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_c_dvorak

He hosts his own 30 minute weekly podcast called Cranky Geeks and is a regular on TWiT with Leo. On TWiT, you can play the John C Dvorak drinking game where you have a drink every time he (or other panelists) mentions his website http://www.dvorak.org/blog

Thanks for the plug. Love the Wikipedia discussion. It is amazing to see how many people cite Wikipedia as a source. Just having completed a course for library school this summer on reference, we were told over and over that Wikipedia is not reliable and should not be cited. However, when I went to observe the reference librarian at our public library they have a feature on the library’s website called “Ask a Librarian”. The questions get forwarded to the librarians on this site called QuestionPoint where the librarians post almost like a blog what they have found to answer the question and what sources they have used, etc. Then they call, email, or send a letter in response to the patron. Several times Wikipedia came up as a source. The only time I use Wikipedia is when I’m organizing my iTunes music library into playlists by decade and I want a quick way to find a date a song was released. I know it may not be 100% accurate but it should be within a 10 year span and the project is really not all that important. Your example of the guy who added the information about the rapper was hilarious and the rapper’s reaction to it was priceless. That is an awesome addition to your soundboard. Great show.

    * Erkster! You can’t trust Goddamn Wikipedia mate! LOL!
    * Still trying to get on the leaderboard, Shawno! ;o)
    * You’ll be surprised how people get burned. Trust me I know! As the injuries suffered by the man in the article, it wouldn’t take much to sustain those deep injuries. Simply put the skin down there is not particularly thick. ;o) And before you ask, the thinkest skin on the body is the soles of your feet, up to 8mm think and the thinest is your eyes lids, about 0.8mm.
    * Shawno, I’ll be emailing you my postal details for Nathan’s prizes…..
    * Mmmmm. I’ve been doing a pretty good job other being mentioned on other people’s podcasts lately. :o)
    * Agree about Ice Road Truckers. It’s getting tired. Time to put it into deep freeze.
    * “See” you two on ErkPod Round Table. ;o)

Shawno & Jen, thanks for coming on RT8. It wasn’t until after the RT that I got Shawno’s email and it wasn’t until the day after when I heard Jen’s latest ep that I realised how crap her week has been. Having been in a similar situation, I can well understand. And if we can make life a bit easier, a bit funner (is that a word?) or a bit lighter, mission accomplished.

Apologies about the massive delay at the start (kicks uStream and webcam) but I’m sure you had a great time as usual.

    Erk,
Yes, being on RT made my day a whole lot better. I always have fun with y’all from Erk Pod. :) Glad that it was okay that I was fairly drunk for the entire RT this time around, and that I stopped “early”. What can I say? It was that kind of week.

  7. Erk @ the Erk Pod said:

    Jen/all

Jen, glad you enjoyed yourself on the RT. It’s always a pleasure to speak with you and Stormo Shawno sponsored by Acme.

From when we should have gone on air at noon until I stopped drinking at dinner afterwards around 8pm, I had 7 drinks. With each can I had in the studio being 1.5 standard drinks, that total goes to 9. But I didn’t really feel drunk, just merry and happy. (But that’s just me, anyway).

With the dramas of the first hour, I’m surprised (and thankful!) that I had anyone to talk to at all! ;)

Thanks for listening, Jacob. Glad you enjoyed the podcast. And I deleted your duplicate posts.

    Thanks shawn,

just so i know, what day does the podcast come out on itunes?

  12. JAcob said:

Hey shawno, if your podcast needs another way of talking with the fans my website has a forums
and i could make a hypernonsense forum

    Jacob

  13. Shawno said:

Thanks for the offer, Jacob. We talked about setting up a forum for this site awhile back. The overall response from our audience was that it’s best to just leave things as they are now. So, there’s no need for a forum at this time.

What’s also bad about Wikipedia is that when it’s deliberately messed with the moderators step in. I listen to another podcast called The Bugle. It’s hosted by a couple of British comedians called Andy Zaltzmann and John Oliver (who you probably know from The Daily Show). A couple of weeks ago they challenged their listeners to edit their wikipedia entry until there was no true facts left on the page. Wikipedia stepped in and disabled new entries on the page.

I’m trying to get on the damn leaderboard too…

Rowley got onto izzie Voodoo thanks to me. I first played her on my own show a few months ago and after discovering she’s a podcaster herself (http://www.voodooquotashow.co.uk) I got her involved in Made In The UK (http://www.madeintheukshow.co.uk) too.

It’s really cool you bought the CD after hearing it on a podcast. My copy wasn’t signed because I got it from her PR company so I could write a review for her. So I didn’t get a signed copy, but I did get it free. She’s actually posted the review I wrote in it’s entirety on her website. Very, very cool.

I keep saying on my show that music podcasting is promotion not piracy. As Jen commented on my homepage the other day, bands who don’t want to send me their singles to be played are REALLY missing the point. 99% of the bands I play are small independent groups who can do with all the publicity they can get. If people don’t hear the material they aren’t going to buy it. It aggravates me intensely when bands get in touch with me via myspace and then won’t send me their singles to play.

Related to absolutely nothing, I heard something rather cool today. As people who listen to my podcast will know I am a HUGE fan of professional cycling. I discovered today that Team Columbia, one of the top professional teams, is based in SLO. The only two things I knew about San Luis before then was you guys live there and Cal Poly - SLO occasionally send players to the NFL. The last one to do so was Chris Gocong who currently plays for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Colin, I’m going to give The Bugle a go. I know the Zaltzman name but it is due to the Answer Me This podcast that Helen Zaltzman co-hosts with Olly Mann. I think that Andy and Helen are brother and sister.

  16. Colin G said:

Erk, I’ve no idea if Helen is related to Andy, but Andy has been on the British stand-up circuit for a while. He also did a popular satirical radio show with John Oliver. They’ve obviously been friends for years, which is one of the reasons The Bugle is so funny.

  17. Shawno said:

I’m definitely gonna check out The Bugle. Thanks for mentioning it, Colin.

  18. Erk @ the Erk Pod said:

Colin, Helen is related to Andy as I thought. She mentioned it on episode 69 of Answer Me This.

  19. The Parallax View(Matt) said:

WHATZ UP Y’ALL? When I read the episode title I thought you both were making a reference to me!

Its been a while so I thought I’d catch up on some shows. Good to hear you guys again, and its good to hear another DrunkCast – no matter how toned down.

    Some thoughts:
I have noticed at airports – other than the one in San Luis Obispo -, that employees will pronounce the city name the same way you referenced. When I was new to the area it confused me because I would think “wait, then what is the correct way to pronounce it?”. Oh well. And yes, there ARE a lot of honky Mofos up in dat piece. I wasn’t so sure when I lived there, but I have noticed that when I am back there that things are a whole lot whiter there than where I currently live. I dunno, maybe the inner racist in me is telling me to move to a more homogeneous city or something. SLC here I come!

Good to hear that you are hanging out at tha gym these days Shawn. I’ve been doing quite a bit of running this summer and its good to see I’m not the only one trying to clamber on up on the health wagon (but what is this I hear about you drinking?…!!!!!!?). You might have to give me a hand to help me on up though.

Sorry I missed out on the Christmas in July contest. I’ll have to get in on that action next time. I gotta know what the link is to that Ghostface Killah youtube clip! It sounded hilarious. As a big Wu-Tang Clan fan, I like to keep up on all aliases of active Clan members. Gotta love 2 Live Crew also…don’t know about The 69 Boys thought, I only have a passing knowledge of them. On the matter of Wikipedia, I have only contributed to an article once, and it was a long time ago, for the article on Stephen King’s novel “The Long Walk” (which he wrote as Richard Bachman way back in the day). I think it was a correction on something inaccurate that someone else had posted if I remember correctly. Anyway, the correction was still up last time I checked so I guess it was accepted by the general public, for whatever thats worth.

I will have to do another post about the whole Kill Whitey thing. That was amazing.

Hope all is well and that this has been a better week for Jenn than the one that this show was recorded during. I’ll be down in SLO next week so I will drop you guys a line!
