G’Day Shawno & Jen!
Really, really enjoyed this show!
A few points:
* I’ll write an iTunes review.
)
)
* I’d love to appear on the show.
* Shawno, I loved your Nabaztag “Imagine” lyrics. (Do I have to pay Yoko as well?)
* We have NO NUKES, but the Brits did blow one up in the outback in the 1950’s.
* Things are tough down here too.
* Jen has THE BEST laugh!!!
* Your Economic Stimulas cheque will arrive! One found it’s way down here.
* “Chuffed” means happy.
* “Quid” is English slang for Pounds Sterling.
* “Po-faced” – British term for someone who is priggish, narrow-minded, disapproving or humourless.
Take Care guys!

Thanks for educating us, Tim. We’ll be in touch via the e-mail to sort out a time for you to come on the show. Next couple weeks are gonna be busy, but we’ll make it happen.
Had a great time hangin’ out with you guys last night on the Round Table, by the way.
June 28th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
No worries Shawno. I educate Erk often enough.
)
Cool mate! I’ll keep an eye out for the email. No rush, anytime. We’re pretty laid back down here in Australia. Some people say we’re so laid back, we’re horizontal.
iTunes review written and submitted. Have no idea, when it will show up on iTunes though. I just hope you like it!
Always cool hanging out with the Chicago Californians!

Orange Tim,
I also like that I have the “best laugh ever”. Thank you
The “Chicago Californians”? I like that.
Round table was so much fun last night. Totally worth sacrificing sleep for. Having you on our show should be fun too. How many different podcasts have you been on now?
Thank you for writing the itunes review. Im sure it will appear whenever itunes gets off its butt and puts it there.
June 29th, 2008 at 12:13 am
G’day Shawno & Jen! (Cal Chi?)
I’ve submitted a few iTunes reviews for a few podcasts but have not seen any of them.
As always, the Round Table was a lot of fun. The episodes are online now. Orange Tim has a full time job educating Erk. doesn’t he!
June 29th, 2008 at 12:33 am
Woo Hoo! My review is up on iTunes! Oh geez, I hope you two like it!!!!
I’ve been on ErkPod, The Wasting Time Podcast, The Nursing Show & The MedicCast thus far.
Looking forward to causing mayhem and destruction with Vanya on HN.
One of these days I’ll get around to doing my own podcast!
May The Force Be With You.
Live Long and Prosper.
Peace Love and Mung Beans Baby!

Enjoyed this show. It was nice to think back on America Beauty as at that time it was big my sense of alienation in America was high – I was trying to unsuccessfully re-integrate myself after having lived abroad, and ended up moving back here to Hungary. It’s a dysfunctional society in many ways, but I feel so much more connected to real life experiences. Last night my buddy Vlada and I went to a free Santana concert and the square was packed with Hungarians of all different ages, incomes, etc. European life means rubbing elbows with everybody; the public transport, for example, is so good I don’t even need to drive.
You were also talking about there being no middle class anymore in the US. While things may be changing there, it is no comparison to developing countries where the contrasts between rich and poor are much more stark. The average monthly wage in Hungary is $460 a month; soon it will be just as expensive to live here as in the rest of Europe. Could you live from that money?
Having said that, people make more of their money some of the poor in Europe are definitely more empowered, like peasants in small communities who can grow and cook their own food. Pre-prepared meals are not that cheap, so granted it’s no party to be poor in the inner city.

Shawno, I’m glad you enjoyed the holiday adventures of both myself and BJ the Research Guy. I hope he keeps blogging!
I won’t speak for BJ or anyone else on Erk Pod but I’ll speak for me. My personal theory is that I’m here for a good time not a long time. I’m single and relatively commitment free and I’m enjoying it. I like to think that I work hard (some people might be laughing at that comment!) so I play hard too (when I feel like it!)
My base wage is about the Australian average (despite what Orange Tim might think!) but where I pick up the extra coin is the shiftwork including the weekends, nights, super duper early mornings etc.
As for the classes, we definitely still have various classes here in Australia. We’ve got our bums, we have our poor, we have our working class, we have our working poor (sometimes self inflicted because of their McMansions, widescreen TV’s, etc), middle class, upper class, upper upper class.
Once again, a great episode and thanks for coming on the Round Table. Hopefully your iTunes review from me will be online soon.
June 29th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Thanks for educating us as well, Erk. I do want to clarify that I wasn’t being critical of anyone’s lifestyle. We’d love to take a long holiday around here, no doubt! I was just hoping against hope that maybe there’s still somewhere in the world where people can live (relatively) well without having to get rich or die trying. Of course, the definition of “living well” will certainly vary from person to person. Anyway, I’m beginning to see that, for the most part, everyone (no matter whether it’s here in the States, or Hungary or Australia) is being held down by The Man! At least podcasting is free. Well, to listen to. Definitely not to produce.
And thanks to you guys for the iTunes reviews. I’m not sure we’ll be able to see them here in the U.S. as Apple tends to divide the iTunes Music Store by different countries. Feel free to send some screen shots along if you’d like. I’ll be sure to leave you guys an iTunes review as well (if I haven’t already).
June 30th, 2008 at 12:25 am
Shawno, you can select to visit the other iStores from the bottom of the main page in the iStore. I saw different HN reviews in the US, UK and AU stores.
June 30th, 2008 at 12:36 am
that’s a brilliant find, Erk. Just tried it, and it works! I can now see yours and Tim’s reviews. I also left you guys a review on the US store. But it hasn’t shown up yet.
June 30th, 2008 at 12:50 am
Excellent, Shawno! Look forward to reading it! Glad I could be of service!
June 30th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Erk,
I just went and checked the itunes AU store, which I didn’t even think to do before you mentioned it. Very nice review, Erk! We appreciate that. Thank you.
Orange Tim,
Thank you.
Just finished reading your review. Very nice, as well. Sweet of you to write that I have “the BEST laugh in podcasting”.
Rowley,
I also checked out the itunes UK store, and can now see your review as well. Very good.
I promise that sometime this week, I will do an itunes review for both Erk Pod and Dark Compass. I might have done one for Dark Compass already, but not for DCMS, so… anyhow.. it will all appear sometime this week.
Thanks again, everyone.
July 1st, 2008 at 5:13 am
Thanks Shawno & thanks Jen.
I’ve read the review that Shawno put on but unfortunately it’s on the older feed.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:24 am
That would be Mena Suvari in American Beauty and Falling Down is a great movie. Joel Schumacher will forever be tarnished by the (admittedly terrible) Batman movies he did, but if you look at his back catalogue there are some really cool movies there. Phone Booth, Flatliners, St. Elmo’s Fire, The Lost Boys and of course Falling Down.
Regarding iPhones. The amount of time I actually spend using my mobile phone makes it pointless to get one. Especially as here in the UK the only network you can get the iPhone for is not one I want to sign up for. On the other hand it’s getting to the stage where I might consider replacing my iPod. Being a music podcaster my iPod is my most prized possession and if I can get a shiny new iPod that you can also make phonecalls on, that would be cool.
Yes, we are all ungrateful bastards.
The rule for copyrighted music like Imagine on podcasts is that you’re free and clear if it’s less than a minute. More than a minute and it starts to get dicey.
I own a bass guitar, but I can’t play it. I agree that guitar/drum bands are cool. The Haiku, Little Fish, I Was A Cub Scout, Blood Red Shoes and of course The White Stripes are all excellent bands.
In addition to the correct terminology from my convict-descended friend above, ‘crumpet’ refers to an attractive woman of questionable morals.
Thanks for all the comments you guys have been leaving on my blogpage. You’re just about the only people who do. I prefer to leave my commenting when I have something (relatively) interesting to say.
PS I agree about the laugh
July 1st, 2008 at 11:11 am
Sorry about the review misplacement, Erk. Just went and left a review for the Maxi feed on the U.S. iStore. (When searching for “Erk Pod” in the iStore, you have to click the “See All” to see the listing for Maxi. That’s why I accidentally went to the old listing.)
And thanks for educating us on crumpets, Colin. I’m still thinking about the iPhone. We’ll talk more about that on the next show. But, like yourself, I’d really like to have a new portable music player. My current cell phone (Sony w810i) has a 2 GB MP3 player, and it works OK. But I have to manually transfer/delete files, etc. It’s annoying, and having the iPhone would end that.
And I wasn’t serious about the “ungrateful bastards” remark. You guys are the best!
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:37 pm
As for me and the iPhone:
My network: FAIL
Contract status: FAIL
MMS: FAIL
Touch Screen: FAIL
Camera: FAIL
I’d rather keep my Nokia N95 and my power station and upgrade to an iPod Classic 80gB.

Looks like everyone else has already posted most of the info. I wanted to, but I will add this: How could you (Shawno) *not* sense the depth of Kevin Spacey’s character? I can totally relate to him. For example, that scene where he’s masturbatatin’ next to his wife while she’s sleeping: I can totally relate.
July 3rd, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Waitaminute, can you erase that comment I just made?
July 3rd, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Sure we can delete it, Harold, if you really want. But I totally LOL’d after I read it.
July 8th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
take 2… @Harold my comments self erase.
kevin spacey is in london running a theatre, the old vic, hence the lack of movies.

argh, it’s a conspiracy.
July 9th, 2008 at 12:15 am
Sorry ’bout that, Paul. For some reason, WordPress marked your comment as spam.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Nah, I don’t want my comments erased. Just had a moment there. I’ve posted a whole lot nastier binaries out there!
July 9th, 2008 at 9:47 am
Waitaminute, that didn’t come out right — I didn’t mean *those* kind of binaries…Ah, I give up…
July 9th, 2008 at 11:52 am
is it weird that my only reference to taco bell is from the movie demolition man, we don’t have those classy restaurants over here.
July 9th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
You aren’t missing anything, Paul. As far as fast food chains go, Taco Bell is pretty much right at the bottom.
July 9th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Paul, I feel you — though not in the Taco Bell sense, since I’ve had my share of Mr. Bell’s franchise. I feel you, though, in that my only reference to White Castle is from an old Beastie Boys song — and also from buying those frozen versions of White Castle burgers at supermarkets here in California. (White Castle is an East Coast thing.)
July 9th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Harold,
White Castle is not just an East Coast thing.
There is a White Castle on the corner of Delhi Pike & Anderson Ferry Rd, Cincinnati, OH. It is the first fast food store you see after driving up the hill, after getting off the ferry that crosses the Ohio River.
There is another on KY18 in Burlington, KY.
Prefer Frisch’s for burgers and fries. They’ve got some shit funny radio ads. Gold Star & Skyline Chili are great. Love a good 3 way.
Didn’t mind Wendy’s. Applebee’s and TGIF’s are good too. Oh and UDF for a nice big vanilla malt!
Although for some reason when I said “Vanilla Malt please” in my Australian accent, I got some strange looks.
July 9th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
There are plenty of White Castles where we used to live, in the Chicago area. (I’m sure Richard from The Wasting Time Podcast could attest to that.) They’re pretty good. Definitely different from all of the other burger places. Me and Jen used to go to their stores in Algonquin and Hoffman Estates, IL pretty regularly.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:26 am
Portilios FTW, right Shawno!
July 10th, 2008 at 8:46 am
You know, Portillo’s does now have two restaurants here in the California. They’re pretty far away from us, but maybe Harold could stop by one sometime? I want to know if they carry Italian Beef sandwiches. A classic Chicago sandwich that’s impossible to find outside of the Chicago area. And as good as Portillo’s is, I say these restaurants have the best Italian Beef sandwiches (assuming they’re all still in business):
1.) Alex’s Restaurant – McHenry, IL
2.) Mr. A’s – Crystal Lake, IL
3.) Luke’s – Carpentersville, IL
4.) Tommy’s Red Hots – Crystal Lake, IL
5.) Dino’s – Lake In The Hills, IL
Honorable mention goes to a place called Michael’s that was in business in Algonquin, IL for about a year. The restaurant was opened by the son of the founder of the Portillo’s chain, and the food was very good. Unfortunately, it didn’t stay open for very long. Guess the guy got tired of running his own shop and went back to work for his dad.
By the way, I’m gonna catch hell from Jen for all of this food talk on here. But, you guys started it, so it’s not my fault. At least, that’s the story as I see it.
July 10th, 2008 at 10:13 am
Oh, here we go again!
July 10th, 2008 at 10:47 am
Sorry, Shawno — I don’t have a car. I might be willing to head to a Portillo via bus sometime if you’ll allow me a review spot on your podcast, though (just for that one occasion, that is)…
July 10th, 2008 at 11:23 am
No worries, Harold. Mostly, I just want to know of the Portllo’s franchises in California have the Italian Beef sandwiches. Regardless, if you ever do make it to one of their shops, you’re welcome to come on the show and tell us all about it. And for that matter, you’re welcome to come on our show anytime you’d lke. Well, after we have Orange Tim on, anyway. He’s first on our list.
And that comment I made earlier about “catching hell from Jen,” that was kinda snarky. I’m sorry, Jen. I shouldn’t have posted that. I’m in a bit of a dark mood this morning, and that’s not your fault. As usual, I’m a master of insertion-of-foot-into-mouth. I hope you’ll accept this pile of kittens as a peace offering.
July 10th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Awwww… pile of kittens! All better now
July 12th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
I’ve been out of the podosphere for a while and have missed the last couple of shows. I’m looking forward to getting caught up with the ranting.
I have a question for you. I have a smartphone and just downloaded an rss reader specifically so I could access your show. I got it up and running but now what? I’m not really sure what an rss is to be honest. I could read some some faq somewhere but that takes too much work. I would much rather get back to playing WoW and let you respond.
July 12th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Subscribing to our RSS feed in a news reader will give you updates whenever we post a new show. If it’s just a straight RSS reader without a podcast aggregator, it won’t download the shows automatically for you. Depending on the specs of the phone, you may be able to click on the media links within the RSS feed to listen to the shows. These things vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so the best way to find out would be to just try it out.
If your phone has an mp3 player built-in, you could also try installing the Podcast Ready myPodder client on the phone, and use it to download our shows directly to your phone. My experience with myPodder hasn’t been that great, but maybe it’d work better for you.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:22 am
I’m sorry your karaoke singing was disturbed by all of those annoying sober people.
If it’s any help, I get drunk to listen to your show!
August 22nd, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Finally getting caught up with the shows.
Lots of things I could comment on but I’ll stick with the Middle Class lament that Shawn offered up. While it is true that there are many working poor in this nation I have a difficult time reconciling the need to treat them justly over the reality that they may not have any marketable skills. Jen, I would assume that you went to college in order to have been a substitute teacher in Ill. Are you using your degree at all?
Admittedly I’m what I like to call a conservative Democrat. I believe that the job of government is to take care of the people but not aid them in every aspect of their lives. If people want to be able to take vacations then they shouldn’t desire the minimum wage to go up but rather they should get a better a job that affords them a lifestyle they desire. Teachers don’t make much compared to the time/effort put in to the job so that’s why many of us advise clubs or sports. That little extra pay will cover that summer trip to wherever-it-is-land.
Jen, you’re a good writer and Shawn is obviously gifted with an on air personality, guitar skills and sound engineering. There must be a way for you to market yourselves … but you guys know as well as I do that SLO has almost no job market.
When Holly graduates from Poly with her degree in Architecture in June we’re moving away. We don’t know where to but it will be somewhere she can make money as an Architect. You have to go where the jobs are.
August 23rd, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Ken,
You get drunk to listen to our show? Well, thats perfect! I get drunk making our show.
Teacher Marc,
Haiku for you:
Not using my degree
teaching makes me miserable
found out too damn late
If I go back to teaching, first of all, it’s going to cost me money. Though I am still certified in Illinois, it doesn’t mean I am certified here in California. I would likely have to take classes, again, and pay for tests, again, and it all costs money. I don’t want to spend the extra money to prove I can do what Illinois feels I do just fine, especially not to do a job that makes me miserable.
True, I could stay a substitute teacher and not have to pay for classes and tests, but then I lose things like: health insurance, sick days, regular hours I can count on being given and paid for, hope of having a paying job of some kind every summer. I was a sub for almost five years, and worked an after school program at the same time, and it was killing me. Teaching was a nightmare. This is what my book is about, which I hope to publish sometime in 2009.
And, I have been doing some basic things to market myself. I write for Helium.com, (which pays writers, but nowhere enough to live on). I talk about my book Haiku of Frustration: Wage Slave on my podcast, and my myspace blog is pretty much devoted to more Haiku, and the hopes of generating more interest in the book. I am on twitter as QueenofHaiku, posting only in Haiku, and once in a while posting where to get the book at, for those that are interested. I have applied for a blog writing job at About.com, but, they filled the position before even looking at my application (or so says the email they sent me). I have an entire book written and in the editing process right now (which is going slower than I ever figured it would). The problem I’m having isn’t so much marketing, it’s competing with the big publishing houses who can afford to pay big chain bookstores to keep 60 copies of someone’s book on hand at all times. And Oprah hasn’t found me yet. And right now, I haven’t paid the money to get an ISBN number on my book, so it will never ever be in bookstores anyway. But even if it were, I work at a bookstore, and know how that goes. One spilled drink takes can take out the entire stock of your book in one store. And, if your book isn’t “modeled for”, it gets taken right off the shelf, never to return. This is why writers drink.
