If I were a comment whore, I would put each individual point in a separate comment and try to get myself on the feedback leaderboard but that’s just not how I roll (I think that’s how the kids say it these days).

I have to start watching ‘Mad Men’. It sounds great. It reminded me of the first time I took a stand during my time in the Air Force. When I was but a young airman, it was still ok for people to smoke at their desks and many of the upper ranking NCOs did. As one of the young guys, we, of course, got all the cleaning chores, one of which was to clean the ashtrays and ‘butt cans’ . I finally spoke up and said that since I didn’t smoke and that I found it offensive, I didn’t think I should have to clean up after smokers. I poop, pee and eat here and have no problems cleaning toilets, sinks, mirrors, ovens, etc. But I draw the line at cigarettes. I was lucky that the Commander was a non-smoker who backed me or my mouth would have gotten me in serious trouble.

While I do like a lot of the indie rock, I cut a lot of my guitar teeth picking up licks from George Lynch (Dokken), Vito Bratta (White Lion), Reb Beach (Winger), Warren DeMartini (Ratt) and the like. I may have to admit that the lyrical content from a lot of these bands may have been a little on light side, the musical chops were incredible. They often don’t get the recognition they deserve.

I would like to state for the record that I’m not “against” indie rock, or any other specific music genre. It’s just that Tom Waits and Wilco are at the top of my list of overrated artists. I’ve listened to them both many times, and have tried to enjoy what they do. I can’t. Perhaps the frustration really lies with myself, for not being able to see what it is that others do in these artists. I also think that a lot of people follow a “herd” mentality when it comes to music, and these days indie-flavored taste makers like Pitchfork are in the driver’s seat.

And I also picked up a lot on the guitar by playing along with bands like Dokken and Van Halen. I recently recovered some of those albums from my collection. And yeah, the songwriting wasn’t so good. But the musicianship was impressive.

First, I hope you didn’t think I was trying to say you had something against indie rock as a genre. Reading back over it, I can see where it may sound that way, but I definitely didn’t mean it that way. I actually tried to go look up the term ‘Indie Rock’ and there was no clear definition. I always thought of it more as a preference for being signed to an independent label over a major label to retain some creative control.

Although I am not too familiar with Wilco, to me Tom Waits joins with several other artists whose songwriting I love but I would much rather hear someone else sing it. These include Waits, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springstein. (I’m sure there will be flamage for this view, but that’s OK) Popa Chubby’s recording of Waits’ ‘Heart Attack and Vine’ is incredible, but I really don’t want to hear Tom sing it. Of course Hendrix did a great job with Dylan’s ‘All Along The Watchtower’ and ‘Like a Rolling Stone’, and the Indigo Girls have a pretty good version of ‘Tangled Up In Blue’ on their live album, but I don’t really want to hear Bob perform them.

Glad you guys enjoyed Amber Gougis’ set! Yeah, I didn’t think the other guy was that good either, but I felt bad for him since everyone was leaving (many were Amber’s friends and family so that makes sense). I kinda stayed for the same reason parents stay to hear the end of a high school band recital even though their kid had already gone. Since the rest of the parents listened to your kid, than you have to stay to listen to theirs. Yeah… doesn’t make much sense, but my pity factor was up. Plus he was looking at me the whole time too, and come on, I’ve already got a soulful piano boy of my own thank-you-very-much! Also from living in SF, sometimes that doesn’t matter guys… you know what I’m talking about. Also I’m full it.

Also Mad Men is probably one of my favorite shows from 2007! The first season ended last fall, so I don’t know when the second will come out. Man, it just keeps getting better too! It would be interesting to see that era (you’re right it’s early 60’s) from the perspective of non-white characters, but I don’t know if this show can fit that into it with being a different show. This is because the characters in the show aren’t people who would likely associate with non-white characters. So we see any non-white characters from their perspective, which is on the fringe of their world. Anyway, it’s a good study of the time and of some really complex and interesting characters.

    Amber Gougis!

When Jessica Alba was on Dark Angel I thought she was pretty good, even though that was a so-so show and I only saw three episodes of it. However, every time I see her in something else she is less and less appealing. It seems like she’s one of the actress’ who are only good for Maxim covers and being the love interest in a bad comedy.

Oh, very nice. Way to follow your new diet.

Haven’t heard the show yet. Perhaps you just photographed it and didn’t eat it.

    We can only hope.

Hey guys! don’t mean to flood the comment board but you should really check out Flight of the Conchords. It’s a new show from HBO that just finished it’s first this fall season. It doesn’t actually have anything to do with Mad Men, but one of the actress on the show also has a small part on Man Men (she’s one of the phone girls).

Alba: Reminds me of an old Steve Martin routine. His words: “I’ve got a great practical joke you can play on a three-year-old kid: Whenever you’re around them, *talk wrong.* So he gets to his first day of school, raises his hand and says, “May I mamboo dogface to the banana patch?”

I just saw that Wilco will be the musical guest on SNL this week. It made me think of Shawno! *ducks*

Has Wilco ever been played on the Bofore Radio podcast? I don’t think so.

I was happy to find that the first show I listened to was no fluke and you two have something good going here. Having said that I noticed that these shows appear to be increasing in length, and this time you didn’t need no gene simmons interview to push the 90 minute mark. You know I could have watched more than half of “Gone With the Wind” during the time it took me listen to this podcast. Less is more people! If you were trying to match the length of my feedback post I only did that because it was my first post. Yeah, I’m just playing again…..maybe.

I haven’t yet seen any episodes of “Mad Men” so I will not judge it, but I will tell you this: I have switched the channel to AMC way too many times expecting to find a…well….. American Movie Classic, only to find that they are at it again with some attempt at original programing. This is what happened to MTV I think. I am old enough to remember (I’m dating myself, I know) when one could actually switch over to AMC and see exactly what the channel’s name implied. Does anyone else remember the days when it cost 25 cents to make a phone call? The problem is not only original programing but the station’s standards have slipped pretty bad over the last few years of what they’ll actually show. Their idea of a “horror friday night” is showing like Halloween 4 and 5 back to back and then tack on Amityville 3D for good measure. Maybe I shouldn’t complain though, they can only pick JAWS to be their film of the month every so often. I think TMC(Turner Classic Movies) has for some time occupied the place AMC once held. I’m sure “Mad Men” is a good show, but maybe it would have been better off located on HBO where they seem to handle original programing with a deft touch. Also on HBO there could have had some more of the scandalous and offensive dialogue that Shawn seems to likes so much.

Speaking of shows on HBO……I’m glad you guys brought up “The Wire”. Having moved away from the MD and the old stomping grounds, The Wire is one of my few connections to life up in tha MD. You know Baltimore – or as we called it”The B-more” - was just a thirty minute drive up tha 495(depending on traffic). I know what you are thinking: “Matt, you can’t claim both D.C. AND Baltimore”, and to that all I have to say is “stfu”. Anyway, great show. If you dig The Wire you may want to check out the ORIGINAL Baltimore crime show – Homicide: Life On the Streets. This show never quite got it’s due but it was one of the best things on television in the mid nineties. It featured Andre Braugher(who ALWAYS plays the black guy) and MY MAN Yaphet Kotto. It even featured a Baldwin brother for God’s sake. Anyway the Friday night combination of “The X-Files” followed by “Homicide” was tha bomb.

First you hate on Trader Joe’s and now Dolly Parton’s bosom? Give me a break. Ain’t nuthin wrong with her juggernauts! I happen to like “natural” women so lay off Dolly! Her breasts were the only thing that made “Straight Talk” watchable. It certainly wasn’t James Woods cashing his paycheck, thats for sure. Besides if it wasn’t Dolly, we wouldn’t have Whitney Houston’s atrocious take on her song “I Will Always Love You” from “The Bodyguard” soundtrack. Think about it.

Okay I’ll shut up now….except be warned – if you choose to flame U2 3D in an upcoming pod cast I will come back with some even more smart ass remarks. I’m finished.

by the way thanks for the shout out! very cool. and yes i do intend to be “consistant”. this extra tacked on post shows how dedicated i am to rise to the top.

  15. Shawno said:

Turner Classic Movies IS what killed AMC, Matt. Once Turner got into the classic movie rocket, it bought the rights to all of the old classics, effectively shutting AMC out of the game.

And “Homicide” was a great show. In fact, I’m pretty sure some of the writers from “Homicide” are also behind “The Wire.”

Also, 90-minute long shows are fairly normal ’round here, just so you know. And we love the long comments, by the way. Keep ‘em coming!

  16. Diana said:

Hey Matt! I agree that for the last two or so years AMC has only lived up to two of the words in that acronym. I remember for the whole month of December they were running Die Hard III constantly Though I do think Mad Men is excellent and doesn’t suffer because it’s on AMC. Right it’s just about the only thing worth watching on that channel.
Also Shawn’s right. David Simon, the creator of the Wire, was a writer and producer of Homicide: Life On the Streets. In fact I believe Homicide was based on one of his books about his time as a Baltimore cop. For me it’s nice to know that once the Wire finishes its last season this year I’ll still have some David Simon type crime drama to rediscover and enjoy!

I have never seen Straight Talk. But I do love the song “Joline” which I believe Dolly not only sang but wrote as well. So she’s OK by my book!

Jessica Alba seriously needs to go away. Eye candy is an understatement but intellectual is an overstatement. We can only hope that she soon moves to England and begins speaking with an accent.

Isn’t Tom Waits that one hit wonder guy from the 80s?

Tried The Wire and didn’t like it. Nothing original, gritty or super-well-written about it. It’s another cop show in a bland genre. I watched the first 3 episodes when they originally aired and I couldn’t take any more. Too formulaic. In deference to you guys maybe I’ll Netflix the entire season 1 and see how it goes.
