Nice episode… no ‘train wrecks’ detected. But, since I have to play “Debbie Downer” for a moment…
The trouble with SLO is it’s terribly unfriendly to anyone who’s finished college but has not yet retired filthy freaking rich.
If you’re still in school, it’s great… there are plenty of clubs and activities, and your rich parents can fund whatever you want to do.
If you’ve retired loaded, you can pretty well do what you want in SLO. Drive your Rolls, own your boutique, open an antique store (as so many have there).
But if you’re working and trying to get ahead, there really are only three things you can so in SLO. You can:
1. Own a business. If you have the capital, you can start something or buy something and try to worm your way into SLO’s notorious ‘old boy’ network. I can think of at least one person who’s done this successfully in the last two decades: Paul Brown, owner of Mother’s Tavern.
2. Manage someone else’s business. This tends to require either years of toil, or “knowing somebody.” You’ll earn just enough to pay rent on the fifth home of some local business owner. But forget getting ahead in any reasonable amount of time.
3. Or, the most likely option: Cashier/wage slave at someone else’s business. You’ll earn nothing, you’ll slowly fall behind on bills and rent, and you’ll eventually be forced join the “SLO exodus” Jen mentioned.
You guys may have done things right with the house thing. But beware having the lot sold out from under that house… heaven forbid, if that happens, there are few options for staying there…
Great ep, though!
